As for taking the last segment, the Mrs. needs 659 miles for Diamond. However, she's not going to be flying a lot next year - probably not more than 30K miles - but will be putting in serious miles in 2012.
Under these circumstances it's better for her to not do the last hop and take PM plus the 49,000+ rollover miles for 2011. That will almost guarantee that she's at least PM for 2012 when she'll really need it. If she takes that last hop and goes DM for 2011 she'll just waste the DM benefits for next year and may end up as a lowly FO for 2012.
Ah yes, the good old days when you didn't have to strategize every mileage decision . . . .
