I frequently prepay my card because I have a very low limit (the story in a second). I always wire money to Amex several times a month and by wiring I can prepay my account for large purchases. Works every time.

I got stuck with a $5,000 a month limit because I decided to switch my spending from Visa to Amex. I applied and got a personal Platinum card (I've had an Amex business platinum open card, not the charge card, for years) and began spending $50,000 - $60,000 a month right off the bat on the personal platinum.

Well guess what. Financial review time came 3 months later. I had the rudest person I've ever dealt with, essentially tell me she needed my life story and if I refused to comply my card would be canceled.

After a heated discussion about what they needed, why I didn't want to give it to them (now it was out of principle) I reminded her I charged nearly $190,000, paid it all back in full, and that I must be on the higher end of good customers so why is she treating me the way she was.

She repeated that I had 3 days to comply or the card would be canceled.

I told her I didn't like the way I was being treated. She told me in no uncertain terms that I was not being cooperative and the card would be canceled if I didn't comply with their "demands".

I told her to f*** off and hung up.

I called back later spoke to a supervisor, explained the situtation and the interaction (asked the supervisor to apologize to the lady only for my last comment as it was uncalled for), but that I would not be providing them with any other documentation other than what I had provided them in the application. I told her if they needed more information they should have requested it then.

I reminded her of my spending (which I am sure she could see), told her I thought I was a good customer, but if they wanted to lose the business they could go ahead and cancel my card.

A week later I got a call (and a letter shortly after) saying they'd decided to put a $5,000 a month limit on my card.

I get a lot of use out of the FHR program so the card is useful to me, but I think it's silly that they forced me to go back to Visa for the bulk of my spending.

Maybe after awhile they'll up my limit, but until then I just prepay my account if I want to use my platinum card to make a big purchase.
