I tried to enroll in Starwood Preferred Guest online. It requires a credit card number. Does Starwood require a credit card even if I enroll over the phone, or is that just an online requirement?

I've got a comp. Starwood Gold offer so I'd like to enroll and give it a shot, but don't want to put a CC on file yet.
