I called, and reservations says I can cancel the flight and get a credit, then book a new flight, but not use the credit and the promo code together, because there's no way to use a promo code over the phone, and there's no way to use a credit over the web.
The normal procedure in this case is to cancel the flight. Then book online with the discount and then send an email to request that your credit be applied to your new flight. It does mean that you will have to lend AC some money as you will need to pay the full prize of the new flight and wait for your refund. The last time I did this, they actually made me wait until I had completed the new flight before processing the refund.
