Many rental companies (my latest example, far from the only one in travels with my wife, was Budget at MIA three weeks ago) cover the renter's spouse at no additional charge, but want him or her listed for the record.
The last time my husband traveled with me Avis did not require this. He was automatically an authorized driver without being listed on the rental. Coworkers are apparently the same.
