I know an unauthorized additional driver who was hauled out at gunpoint and sat handcuffed in the back of a police car until the cop who pulled him over for driving without a seatbelt was satisfied that he had not actually stolen the car.

It got sorted out in the end, but was not a pleasant experience for him. Well worth $5 or whatever to avoid.
