Business class fares go J, C, D, etc....Op-Ups will happen by members status (GS,1K etc) and fare class...i.e. A GS with a J ticket ( that has been paid for with $$$ and NOT an award) will be first in line for an op-up...unless I'm mistaken.
Not to suggest I have seen it all, but I have never been able to purchase (with $) a J fare on UA. I have only ever purchased C, D, or Z fares. J is, as I recall, a relatively recent (say last 12-24 months) addition which only books "Standard Award" bookings. If that was not your question, so far as I know, Award tickets are not technically eligible for upgrades, but I know F Standard Awards book into F or A (and so I would presume are largely indistinguishable to agents from a purchased fare). Standard C awards used to (years ago) book as a full C ticket, but with the addition of J I just do not know how that is striated (as J only exists to accommodate Standard awards).
