The justification for renamaing USAit to USAirways was that "major" carriers use "Airways" or "Airlines" and US wanted to be considered equal to AA, UA, etc.

It is all marketing, there is no real "meaning" any more than why German cars have numbers and letter and US cars have names. It's just how they decided to do things.
