Booked as a through itinerary ATH-LHR-ORD would certainly be more miles than LHR-ORD, although the ATH-LHR flight would book into Club that way (for a First redemption).
I'm not sure on the figures, but it may be that the difference required in miles is more than what you would spend breaking it into two tickets... but as you note you could be unprotected on a flight connection if they are two tickets, and the out-of-pocket taxes (UK departure tax in particular) might be a bit more. Definitely a YMMV situation.
