Having also stayed in 97 at the Maui Prince Makena, I can concur with DH. I liked this place a lot. Maybe I was out of season, but the place wasn't completely over-run by Japanese. The beaches along this stretch of coast were excellent, and very quiet.

I've also tried the Renaissance, where the food and service was superb, and they did some good value promotional rates.

I have also stayed at the Grand Wailea which has excellent facilities, for which you pay top rates, but the service was absolutely lousy and ruined the stay. I would steer clear of this place.

The drive to West Maui only took about 30 minutes, so the location of the Maui Prince was not a problem.
