YYZ-EWR-HNL-EWR-YYZ on CO

2 hour turn at HNL

10,602 Status Miles!
Today was the day for my two colleagues to do this MR to HNL.

They got as far as ALB (Albany NY) as weather was bad at EWR and had to divert, spent an hour (maybe more) on the ramp sitting in the plane waiting for a gate. I checked EF and saw no options that didn't basically mean over nighting (ALB, EWR, ORD, etc.) and starting the whole thing again tomorrow morning. This was not feasible so we made the decision to try to return back to YYZ. The best CO could do (after some time on the phone) was send them on to EWR and then back to YYZ. They said we would then have to call Customer Service to see what our options are for (partial) refund / credit / reschedule. We asked, and CO agreed to let them stay in Albany and cancel the rest of the itinerary.

I used 20K points (IKK) and $116 to fly them both back direct on AC/Jazz. They just landed.

I know that these are the risks in doing tight MR's and that CO is not responsible for weather.

My question is, under these circumstances what should we expect from CO? I'd happily let them keep the full amount if the credited the original status mile amounts (Yes... I know I am dreaming).

Suggestions and advice welcome
