I think "DLIDF" is a knee-jerk response that comes from two places. First, many people (even those who fly on occasion) view flying as essentially a discretionary activity of the wealthy, and therefore see anti-TSA sentiment as akin to complaining about a mansion tax. Second, I think a lot of people are genuinely scared of flying (even though they won't admit it) and el Teatro Seguridad de America really does make them feel better.

So I think that any response needs to focus on putting the TSA's ridiculousness in a context that is routine and universal.

Two analogies I like to use are:

1) More people are killed by auto accidents every single month than were killed by terrorists on 9/11 (the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history--an attack that would be almost impossible to replicate for a variety of reasons, yet seems to be the main thing the TSA is focused on preventing). Should we mandate devices on cars to electronically limit speeds to the speed limit? Should we mandate breathalyzer tests outside bars? Should we simply ban cars?

2) Globally, terrorists are just as likely to attack shoppers as travelers. Requiring virtual strip searches to enter a shopping mall would therefore be at least as effective at making you safe as requiring virtual strip searches to enter an airport. Why don't we do that, too?
