The £15k spend can be split between Amex and Mastercard (many of my big ticket purchases do not accept Amex)? The flight has to be booked with airmiles, but can you do part miles part cash? As flights are BA only, can you go to Australia from the UK?

As opposed to ""upgrading", i would cancel and then reapply for the premium credit product. Perhaps even to ensure receiving the voucher, create a new identical AIRMILES account and then use the easy online merge function to combine the accounts.
I am also tempted to go for this card for the 2-4-1 voucher to be used on a SYD redemption, however i agree that albeit good value, it would be a hard slog and your not aloud to take the Asia hub connection as a stop-over.
