SFO terminal three has two checkpoints near the United check-in area, one upstairs and one downstairs. If you walk past (to the left, if you're facing away from the curb) of the main checkpoint near United, down the stairs, and then turn and walk back again in the direction you came, there's a second, smaller checkpoint. It's mostly used by vendors and employees, but I went through it recently (Sunday) because the line was shorter than the one upstairs and it didn't seem to have any of the new machines.

If the OP has serious PTSD issues, perhaps flying CUN-TIJ, crossing the border in TIJ and picking up a rental car in San Diego is an option? Even if other family members traveled by air, it might be worth the time and hassle to the OP.
(That said, I'd be very careful about getting from the airport to the border crossing.)
If we ever go back to the US after this it will definitely be by car. We had considered car this trip but I didn't want to be out of work all that time (it is about a 2-week trip each way). I had no idea then.
