I recently was able to request an itinerary change due to equipment change. The plane went from a 321 to a 319 and I stated that I needed to be on the wifi-equipped plane so that I could work during the flight (which was the truth). I didn't have any pushback or hassle. YMMV especially if there's no wi-fi involved.
