I won't check bags. It is on the return trip, so it would be the last leg of the itinerary. Also, something similar happened a couple weeks ago, more on accident by my part, and I did recieve miles for the missed leg.
Since we dont know your exact itin all I can suggest is for you do a muliti-city booking to see if you have the return as SYR-CLE and the Outbound what you will actually be flying if it will cost you less $$ then booking the return SYR-CLE-LAX
usually hidden citys are close by I cant understand how they will charge you less for a SYR-CLE-LAX over a SYR-CLE so I can se a SYR-CLE-ORD being cheaper then say SYR-CLE but not when LAX is the final destination
But then again we are talking about CO which pulls some beauts at times
