I don't know about using points for upgrades, but if you are a gold or platinum Starwood member they seem to upgrade you automatically to some pretty nice rooms/suites. In my past 6 stays at a variety of Sheratons/Westins I have been upgraded 5 times (without asking!)--just by showing my card.
