Either book 2 Deluxe sleepers or 4 soft sleepers and tell them that you want them to be in the same cabin.

The prices are fixed. However, there is a small chance that all seats have been sold out. This is most likely to occur during the Chinese New Year period.

Just like anywhere else, this depends on demand. For example, I can still see a Y570 fare SHA/PEK on the 1st of December, but if you did the same thing during CNY then you're likely to have to pay a lot more.

Also if you're booking close to the travel date then you may find that all the cheap flights leave/arrive at unappealing hours.

As the underlying price is fixed the only variable is the fee charged depending on where you buy:

1) Train stations: fee = 0.
2) Ticket outlets: fee = Y5 per ticket.
3) Hotel concierge: fee = at least Y15 per ticket.
