Assuming there is a way of keeping them I have to ask is there any point, given that we are likely to make one transatlantic each year (though typically our Denver friends came over here this year!)? Upgrading is most unlikely given the prohibitive cost though an internal flight is a possibility in the future. But how many years would we need to be flying over before acquiring enough points?

Is there any realistic point in staying in the program?

The expiry date of your miles is extended whenever there's activity on your account (e.g. redemptions or earning). If you fly once a year, your miles will effectively last forever.

I'm not sure what you're referring to as the "prohibitive cost" of upgrading (are you referring to the co-pay, or the large amount of miles needed?). IIRC, the cheapest awards start at 15000 miles, so I'd say you're actually pretty close to being able to use your points.

Since the program is free, it seems like you don't lose anything by staying in the program.
