What's your laptop model? There are hundreds of HP laptops; there is no standard.

Sounds like it is a high power model which overloaded power sockets. Many airplane power sockets are limited to 75-90W. Some of the older LH 744s only support up to 60W.

Also, power consumption is greatly reduced if you are not charging. Removing battery usually does the trick.
