Personally, if my confirmed flight is cancelled, I consider myself lucky if I can get on the next flight and I don't worry much about my boarding pass number/seat selection.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in total agreement here. I saw alot of disappointed and/or pissed faces when the announcement was made that the 2nd flight was full...so was happy to be on the flight (especially a short flight).
