I guess with all three devices (phone, compuer, cloud) in constant sync, there is no 'primary' calenday anymore, though I do effectively abandon the old calendars set up in iCal. If you want that data you can import an iCal calendar into gcal. Add calendar->import. IIRC you have to export the iCal calendar on your mac to an ics file and then import to gcal.
