I vote NO for this type of counter. The poster can often get an idea of the number of times the thread is read by the number of replies (or some ratio thereof - there must be many FTers who read but don't reply).

But "non-interesting" threads (i.e. those that don't receive many replies, thus probably not read that much) usually sink to the bottom of the forum fairly quickly. Unless, of course, the poster bumps them back up with his/her own replies!
