Mar tours(www.martoursandsafaris.com) is a budget opertaor based in Moshi. I used them in 2008 - it was about $1175 per person for 2 people doing a 6-day Machame climb. Lots of SP folks have used them. If you're an experienced hiker, climber, or backpacker an operator like them will provide all you need. Yes, the tents are smaller, older, and can be a bit worn - but they ran a safe operation.

No matter which route you take there'll be lot of people, but this is not mountaineering where you get stuck in long lines getting through difficult sections.Marangu will be most crowded, Machame next. To improve your chances of making the summit make sure you do at least a 6-day trip. The success rate for 5-day hikes is much lower than for 6 or higher. Being a experienced hiker won't affect how your body acclimatizes - going slowly is your best option.

Also - it is important to remember that the vast majority of your fee goes to the National Park (as they said, about $110/day). That doesn't leave much for the guide, cook, porters, etc. You should not skimp on tips - this is the best way to ensure that money gets into the hands of the locals.
