appears that will be needed, the first agent was wrong ... BUT avoid using the word upgrade. UA does not consider E+ an upgrade and using the word upgrade may be confusing the inexperience agent. Just say you want to purchase E+ onetime access.

Theoretically you will not be offered the ability to purchase a first class upgrade until the waitlist is cleared and there is upgrade inventory. In general, while there is a chance, it should not be counted on.
