There''s the rub- it doesn't. Some folks have gotten lucky and gotten elite perks with non-direct purchase (I know someone who got a HH Gold upgrade in Shanghai after a Priceline (I believe) purchase). But that's definitely luck and not to be counted on, if it matters.
