As long as there is a seat in the same cabin, you can do SDC. It doesn't have to be the same fare bucket as they can overbook the class of service. In a pinch they can just book you to Y giving the benefit of a bump in upgrade chances and MQM but for the most part that loophole has closed(getting extra MQMs).
