The thing to remember is that (if you don't expect to fly much) retaining Gold actually gives you status for two more years, not one, because of the soft landing to Silver. So even if you are down to a few s/h trips in Y you will have lounge access and other benefits for 24 month. If you don't renew Gold now then you go to Silver, so if you don't fly much in the next year, you might end up back at Blue.
And J in BA compares very favourably to some of the other F products mentioned.
P.S. How do you get to Gold from Burkina Faso? No OW airlines go anywhere near there, do they?
