IIRC the SkyPriority after upgrade applies only to the single direction of travel, not the entire RT or multicity itinerary. Thus, unless one of the return segments is upgrades in advance, the OP gets SkyPriority and more bags throughout the outbound trip SLC-DTW-Canada but not for the return portion.
I always use my SC, PM or DM card to access MSP or DTW SC when returning directly to YYZ. There is like one flight per day from MSP or DTW to YYZ that has a F cabin. NW used DC9 - One F seat in that is more comfortable than two seat in the CRJ200.

When ATL doesn't know which side of the Canadian flag is up DL's definition of Canada and international doesn't surprise me.

I stand corrected, F upgrade only applies to the direction that the upgrade applies. Thanks for the correction.
