You can always ask an agent nicely. The issue could be that the baggage system wouldn't know where to route the bag at that time (as it goes to a lateral that changes daily), and/or that there simply isn't any space for them to set the bag.

You can also consider bribing a bellhop at the airport hotel a few bucks to hold on to your stuff.
