What you should do is what I did the other month when I was in HNL I stayed at a non-SPG Hotel and didnt have to pay a cent in a resort fee. If you chose to still go and stay then pay up my friend
The issue is that the property is acting in apparent violation of current rules which I confirmed in a recent email to Plat concierge:
When a resort charge is added to a reservation where the amenities are already complimentary for Platinum members the resort is require to substitute another amenity of similar value for the Platinum guests.
While I may rethink my future spending with SPG based on this and several other encounters I fully expect them to honor the benefits I earned from my past stays therefore I am hoping to resolve this. I am fairly certain this will be sorted out ahead of my stay but it's a PITA to deal with.
