I think - but I could be wrong, that getting an oceanfront suite upgrade and a $20/day resort fee versus a 300 sq ft room off the beaten path at another hotel with no view plays into the thought process of go/no-go on resort fees. Regardless, I did note I wasn't charged a resort fee and was given a amenity for each of the 6 nights of the award stay. If you stay frequently at these hotels they note it and treat you well, including waiving fees and giving great upgrades above and beyond a standard suite.
