Try pricing BUF-SYD -- generally USD 500 cheaper (partly due to Canadian taxes, partly YYZ having the highest landing fees in the world). YYZ-HKG is artificially cheap due to CX having non-stop flight on that route, while there is no YYZ-SYD equivalent.
The other option is to buy one of those cheap YYZ-BKK/SIN/KUL tickets and then buy Air Asia to Oz. Even QF sometimes has cheap fares SIN-SYD, though not often.
