The meal for westbound flights that leave before 10AM is supposed to be "brunch." There's usually a sweet option like french toast, a cereal/fruit option, an egg option (often with steak) and a savory option that's more like lunch or dinner.
It starts with breakfast breads (instead of rolls) and usually an appetizer of smoked fish or something like that.
If that's not what you were served, I'd venture to guess it was a catering error.
I was served dinner in BE on DL 5, LHR-DTW earlier this year, and then lunch before landing in DTW. Seemed sort of odd to be serving dinner at 9:45 AM London time/ 4:45 AM Detroit time, but that's what we got.
