SAS is very relaxed in regards to carry-on, in particular if you compare to US carriers. (Also, SAS does not have the carry-on problems US carriers have, so they can afford to be relaxed, i.e. most people still check in bags on European carriers as it is free).
Well, they have the option of make rules that make sense and then stick to them.

I personally hate the "make strict rules and then don't enforce them" approach, basically it means you either have to risk it every time you fly, or be happy with having half the allowance other people are carrying.

I'm no violinist, but the same problem applies for example to having a laptop in a separate bag/case: 95% of the time it's not a problem, but you still have to make sure you are able to fit it in the other bag, as there's no way I'm checking that.
