UA have been kind enough to status match me as well.
Thanks for all suggestions. Let me just respond as follows:

-UA/DL: After previous experiences flying these 2 airlines have made myself promise that I would never set a foot on an American legacy carrier if avoidable.

-V Australia: Had a look at them when I booked my trip in September and the price difference between them and QF was minimal. Was also under the impression that V Australia does not have a lounge in LAX where you can take a shower prior to departure.

-NZ: Read many good reviews about them but am a Oneworld mileager sucker so NZ is just in the wrong alliance

-LA: Tried their business class product in April from Auckland via Santiago to Sao Paulo. Seating was very good but found overall service and AVOD average at best. Would certainly fly them again if my job takes me to South American but would not consider this long route to the US.

Any one have any inside information if the A380 will be back on the SYD-LAX sector within the next 2 weeks ? Any chances at all ? What do you think ?

Cheers from Brisbane,
