That's my strategy too. You don't save any time sitting in 1A if you will have to wait for valets anyway. And most of the time I have my rollaboard, so I go for the exit row A seat.

I used to take 1A a lot, and I found it was a tossup with regard to using the closet for my briefcase. Sometimes the FAs agreed to my very polite, humble request to store it there, while others were shocked that I would ask and adamant that the closet is for crew use only. Go figure!
