I've got some news for you... the TSA has been charging you $2.50 per enplanement for nearly a decade. If you examine any ticket you've bought recently, it should have a line marked "September 11th Security Fee" or "AY." The airline just collects the money as part of your ticket purchase and remits it to the TSA.

The charge is levied per enplanement, so if you take a 4-segment roundtrip, you just paid $10 for the privilege of being scanned, ogled, and/or groped.
