I always thought that McD's were not as prevelent in Europe as they had better taste than us. Though I think even the Belgians have the McD experience.
I believe that the employee protection laws in France, strong as they are, are still materially weaker than in Belgium. I do have some, admittedly limited, experience with both.
As to McD's not being present because the Europeans have better taste than Americans: last I heard the busiest McD's in the world was in the center of Munich, Germany, and the second busiest was on the Champs Elysee, Paris. Must all come from tourists, right?
