Apologies but reading through the various threads didn't quite see the answer.

I have the following award to Europe booked in BUSINESS :
My current itinerary is (from LAX) all DL metal outbound for 100K, and the return on AF for 50K return, for a total of 150K RT... 50% more than what should be needed.

I am trying to find a way to get it to a respectable 100K total. Using KVS, I found availability on AF from JFK to CDG for 50K on the outbound, but being from LAX, that doesn't quite work as all the domestic flights to JFK are High awards (both Y & J).

Is it possible to book the LAX-NYC portion in Y (high) and should availability (in low) come around, get some miles back? I'll lose my Plat status next year so I know that there'll be a fee, but currently I'm paying an extra 100K miles (300K vs 200K for 2 tix).

I'm presuming mixing and matching with different carriers possible and getting a refund on excess miles are possible.

Thoughts?
