Maybe you can ask at check-in in DUS that EK puts you on the early flight to MNL if seat became avail. whatever the case, your bags will travel with you!

In fact, I am surprised to read bags would be put on an earlier flight than you in this age, esp. in USA? maybe that was pre 9-11?

Also, you might be entitled to a hotel room from EK as your layover is over 8 hours. can't hurt to ask
