That is correct. If the count is over or under OP's will take out their list to determine the discrepancy - whether it's someone on the a/c who should be getting off or someone who got off in error.
If they find someone may have gotten off in error they will then start paging in the terminal.
Be kind, save them the extra work and make it known to the OP's agent at your gate that you are not returning for the next leg of the flight.
