United sells the flights, partly handles the passengers, is responsible for any irregular operations situations, and the aircraft are painted with the word UNITED in bold text. However, when it's convenient for United to do so, they justify any improper treatment of their customers with the excuse, "They're not United Airlines, they're an independent carrier."
As a United pilot, it just rubs me the wrong way when the express carriers are referred to as United in any way. I don't normally offer my opinion on the subject unless asked, with this post being an exception.
I agree with you on the excuse thing though. When UA screws up, UA needs to step up and take the rap.
That said, I like the "United Mainline" included in the PA announcement. I think I'll start including it in my PA announcements where appropriate, and not to rub anything in or use it as a sleight, just to make sure our passengers know what airline they're on.
