Kind of like when you go to a budget motel and they offer free wireless internet but when you go to a St. Regis they want to charge you $20 a day.
I don't mind tipping bellhops if I need help with my bags, but if I'm not allowed to self park I usually tips a dollar when I drop off and a dollar for pick up. Sometimes the people working valet are extremely friendly and have given great advice on how to get to places or where the best place to eat. A prime example would be at the St. Regis in Aspen, the guys there go above and beyond and seem to really enjoy working there. In that case I don't mind giving a good amount more.
The problem is with some services where you pay a fee, like for parking or a delivery fee on food... you have no idea if the kid is making minimum wage or if any of that fee is passed on to them. When you go to a football game and pay $20 for parking and the person taking the cash is making $6 an hour should you give them a tip? Or the guy waving you into your spot?
If they can waive the internet fee for plats, why not waive the parking fee? I know that would make me more likely to give my loyalty to that particular hotel brand. Interestingly enough, during my aspen stay they for some reason did not charge me for parking and I decided to pass that on to the guys at the valet.
