If you go to a non-schengen nation, i.e. the UK, then it's an international to international transfer -- you would clear immigrations and customs at LHR.
Actually, you go through both immigration and customs at CDG when you are leaving Terminal 2E. The connections to Schengen destinations are in 2F. You actually go out through the customs exit when you leave 2E to go over to 2F.
When we connected from CDG to MXP a few years ago, we also had to walk through the "nothing to declare" line at MXP.
