Usually airlines will issue a voucher for the price difference without charge, at least AS, DL, and UA do. The fare class has to be available on the your flights to qualify. Sometimes there are restrictions such as webfares that don't qualify. If you actually want a refund to your credit card you may have to pay the applicable change fee. </font>
In the aforementioned instance, the fare inventory was not available on the flights when I had the rollover exchange. As I had predicted, L inventory sold out. American Airlines rolled over the fare as the original ticket was booked into the same inventory as the new fare. According to the AAgent, the difference was refunded to my charge card without paying a change fee.

From what I gather from your post, United Airlines and Delta Airlines do this as well, but with the added restriction of the inventory having to be available?
