No. It doesn't automatically increase. You have to call AA up and ask that they reflect the status change on your booked ticket. The time stamp will be the time when you make this new request, which is when you call.
Now before you lament the fact that you've lost your position in the upgrade queue because of a later time, note that even a late requesting EXP trumps an early PLT, so it's in your best interest to re-request it with the higher status.
And lastly, it has been mentioned in other threads, also very explicitly. Maybe it's just hard to find.
