exbayern, just saw your post above mine (it posted while I was writing). Will check for other threads.
Perfectly legal, and done all the time, even just flying back to your own country. For example, YVR-HNL used to be (and maybe still is) much cheaper than SEA-HNL.

Likewise, I regularly drive from Vancouver to Seattle to fly to LHR, via Vancouver. On one occaision I drove to Seattle to fly back to Halifax.

No one will bat an eye.
