Are you sure you're not confusing membership year with card expiry date? The latter for mine expires 14 months after the year started. I'm still not sure why that is but I know it's widespread.
I was just looking at membership year info online (it is indeed about 1 year and 6 weeks past when I made Silver). My card expires about 1-2 months after the end of the membership year.
