Oddly enough this question has been discussed in great detail on the AA section in a thread titled Is GLD / Gold worth it? What are the benefits?

It all boils down to what are the bennies worth to you and how much will you use them in the upcoming year.

For me, if I were to fly 18-20K miles next year, it would be worth it! Why 18-20k? Just my value. Of course I am a guy who did a 33K MR to reach EXP in 2009 and am still enjoying the benifits.

I'm based in WAS -- so I'd need to do something farther than DFW to get the needed miles... so it'll get costly, I'm guessing. Any advice? Is it worth it? And any MR ideas?
